Berkeley County School District’s (BCSD) leaders have made the decision to close all schools on Sept. 8-12 to allow students, staff, and their families time to prepare for Hurricane Irma.
Essential personnel including maintenance and facilities, technology, school administrators, Superintendent’s cabinet and their designated support staff, school custodians and cafeteria managers will report Friday morning and be released at 2 p.m. to prepare schools for the impending weather.
All afterschool activities and sporting events to take place on Friday, September 8, are canceled and information concerning rescheduling will be released when it becomes available. Additionally, all after school day care programs will also be canceled on Friday, September 8.
District officials are continuing to work closely with Berkeley County Emergency Preparedness Center to monitor the hurricane and potential impact on the county. Officials are also receiving regular updates from the National Weather Service.
Officials will continue to closely monitor this weather event and will communicate with parents, staff, and the community as frequently as possible about any changes or additional closures.
OTHER CLOSURES REPORTED
Old Santee Canal Park: As a precaution and in preparation for Hurricane Irma, Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner will be closed until further notice beginning Sept. 8. The park is open Thursday until 5 p.m.
Berkeley County libraries: Library branches will be closed Friday, Sept. 8 – Monday Sept. 11 as a precaution and in preparation for Hurricane Irma.
Town of Moncks Corner offices: Moncks Corner town staff will be on site until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8. Afterwards, only police, fire and other essential staff members will be on site until conditions become safe again.
The Moncks Corner Lions Club and Southern Barbeque Network’s SBN Invitational BBQ Championship originally slated for Sept. 15-16 has been postponed. A new date is TBA.
GOOSE CREEK CLOSURES/POSTPONEMENTS
City of Goose Creek Offices Offices: The city’s offices will be closed Monday and Tuesday Sept. 11 and 12 due to Hurricane Irma. The city council Sept. 12 meeting has been postponed until Tuesday, Sept. 19.
The Goose Creek Community Center and Crowfield Golf Club will be closed from Sunday, Sept. 10 through Tuesday, Sept. 12.
All scheduled bench trials and jury trials (all cases) on the dockets for Goose Creek Municipal Court will be canceled or continued, and notices will be sent to all parties with new court dates as soon as possible, for the week of Sept. 11 through Sept. 15. South Carolina DMV Administrative Hearings held at the Goose Creek Municipal Court on Tuesday, Sept. 12 will be continued. All jurors summoned for jury duty will not need to appear next week and will be sent a new letter when needed.
The Giant Goose Creek Yard Sale scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 16 has been postponed. The event will now take place on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Goose Creek’s Zoning Board of Appeals meeting scheduled for Monday, Sept. 11 has been cancelled. The ZBA’s next meeting is Oct. 4 at City Hall. The agenda items for Monday’s meeting will be moved to Oct. 4.
Both the Goose Creek Recreation Commission Meeting and the Cultural Arts Commission meeting scheduled for Monday, Sept. 11 have been cancelled.
The following Goose Creek Recreation classes and games have been cancelled: Half Pints and Bright Beginnings Preschool, Friday, Monday and Tuesday; Fitness Classes on Saturday and Monday; all fall ball games, Sept. 11-14; all football games, Sept. 9 and 11; and Middle School Volleyball on Sept. 8.
The city’s Sanitation Collection schedule for next week will be as follows:
Monday, Sept. 11: No sanitation collection (Goose Creek Department of Public Works Office closed)
Tuesday, Sept. 12: Monday and Tuesday routes collected (DPW Office open)
Wednesday, Sept. 13: normal Wednesday schedule
Thursday, Sept. 14: normal Thursday schedule
Friday, Sept. 15: normal Friday schedule
